ADHD in Adults in the US

It’s estimated that 9.4% of children between ages 2 and 17 years in the US have or have had a diagnosis of ADHD.1, 2 While ADHD begins in childhood, some people are not diagnosed until they are adults. The diagnoses of ADHD are increasing among adults of every race/ethnicity in the US.3 This may reflect increased awareness of ADHD in adults by both healthcare providers and the public.3

Based on a study of a large number of residents within a healthcare system in a specific region in the US, ADHD diagnosis among adults in the US increased over four times faster than among children between 2007 and 2016.3

  • Cases of childhood ADHD increased by 26.4% compared to 123.3% among adults.
  • Even though the number of adults diagnosed with ADHD is increasing, most scientists believe that ADHD is underdiagnosed in adults compared to children.4
